Background

CIHR aims to improve the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples through the assertion of Indigenous understandings of health and by fostering innovative community-based and scientifically excellent research.

The NEIHR Program has been developed to address the specific health needs of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The NEIHR Program will take a comprehensive approach to capacity building in Indigenous health research.

This funding opportunity seeks to support a minimum of nine (9) individual NEIHR centres: at least one (1) grant each based in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic Region, and Nunavut; and at least one (1) grant based in Yukon or the Northwest Territories. Each NEIHR grant represents a centre and is responsible for defining their catchment area (e.g., Inuit Nunangat; Quebec and Ontario combined) and study/target population (i.e., First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Indigenous, on-reserve First Nations, urban Indigenous people or other combination).

All funded NEIHR centres will be expected to participate in a consortium between Indigenous communities, researchers, knowledge users and other interested parties under one common governance structure in order to form an interconnected and collaborative Indigenous-led NEIHR Consortium across Canada. In addition, one of the centres will be required to take on the additional role of NEIHR Coordinating Centre.
