Recently the INMD Institute Advisory Board (IAB) met in Ottawa to focus the development of the new INMD strategic plan. The IAB worked diligently over the course of a few days to create goals, objectives and performance indicators for the new strategic plan. The IAB also had the opportunity to hear from CIHR staff, including Jeff Latimer (Director General) and Kim Banks-Hart (Manager, Strategic Partnerships) about the development of the new CIHR strategic plan. They spoke about the process CIHR will follow, which includes gathering input from IABs the research community (see link below) and partners, to create the new CIHR strategic plan.

The highlight of the meeting was the opportunity to interact with Dr. Mike Strong, President of CIHR, who joined the IAB for breakfast. Dr. Strong talked about his experience in the last few months as President of CIHR, his commitment and passion for training and capacity building and his future plans for CIHR. He spoke about the importance of following up on research to identify the real-world impact that CIHR funded research creates. In regard to capacity building, Dr. Strong also addressed the need for early career support and the importance of developing a clinician scientist training program that is flexible and portable to optimize the training environment. He spoke about tackling health issues through the development of a new strategic plan for CIHR, and making sure that CIHR tracks its impact on improving major health inequalities in the long term. Lastly, Dr. Strong talked about partnering with international organizations and the importance of these partnerships in positioning CIHR in the global health research community.

Wishing all of you a safe and warm summer!

Norman Rosenblum, MD, FRCPC
Scientific Director, CIHR-INMD
