Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
September 2020

It has been some time since we last published the INMD newsletter and the world changed so dramatically as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, CIHR announced a three-month pause on existing and new strategic funding opportunities, with the exception of those related to COVID-19, in order to accelerate the development, testing, and implementation of measures to mitigate the rapid spread of COVID-19 and its negative consequences on people, communities, and health systems.  In addition, CIHR spent the summer months focused on delivering the peer review of the Spring Project Grant competition. For all of you who spent your summer days reviewing CIHR grant applications, thank you. CIHR could not carry out this work without the dedication of people like you in the research community.

CIHR is now working to re-establish a number of key funding initiatives. These strategic funding opportunities include INMD’s major initiative developed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes. As competition timelines are confirmed, applicants will be provided with at least two months advance notice to allow them to prepare their applications for any competitions in progress, such as the Team Grants in Diabetes Mechanisms and Translational Solutions, which is currently posted on ResearchNet with a “placeholder date” of December 31, 2021. Please stay tuned to ResearchNet and the INMD newsletter as more information regarding the revised timelines becomes available.

As many of us prepare for a new academic year, this month will be like no other in recent history, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is great concern about the safety of our students of all ages and staff, and I want to wish everyone in academic settings a very safe return-to-school experience.

Best regards,

Norman Rosenblum, MD, FRCPC
Scientific Director, CIHR-INMD
