Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
October 2020

I am pleased to share the news that CIHR will be resuming strategic competitions that were put on hold when the pandemic struck.  Among the first competitions to be remobilized is the Team Grants in Diabetes Mechanisms and Translational Solutions. These Team Grants are part of the 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes initiative. This initiative is a collaborative effort of a number of international, national and provincial partners and funders, as well as 10 CIHR Institutes. Please visit 100 Years of Insulin: Featured Research to read about the results of the UK-Canada Diabetes Research Team Grants funded in partnership with the UK Medical Research Council. More information regarding the launch of other strategic funding opportunities will be available in the near future. Please visit ResearchNet regularly for updates to competition timelines.

COVID-19 has underscored the importance of the contributions of health research in Canada and around the world.  I know many of you working in clinical settings have provided direct care for Canadians suffering from COVID-19. Many more of you are dedicated to improving the lives of Canadians through research on more effective prevention and treatment of kidney, liver and digestive diseases and obesity and diabetes, all of which impact the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19. As we move into what some are calling the second wave of COVID-19 in Canada, I want to encourage you to continue your important work and thank you for your dedication.

Best regards,

Norman Rosenblum, MD, FRCPC
Scientific Director, CIHR-INMD
