Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
February 2022

INMD was pleased to co-host a virtual Strengthening Workshop with the CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH), and Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) to support applicants successful at the Letter of Intent stage of the Team Grants in Diabetes Prevention and Treatment in Indigenous Communities: Resilience and Wellness.

Members from the 11 applicant teams were present for the Workshop, which included outstanding presentations from Dr. Debbie Martin, Professor, Dalhousie University, and leader of the Wabanaki-Labrador Indigenous Health Research Network and the Atlantic Indigenous Mentorship Network. Debbie provided two presentations during the Workshop; the first was focused on community engagement, and the second provided grant-writing tips for applicants. We were also privileged to have Harlan Pruden, Indigenous Knowledge Translation Lead at Chee Mamuk, an Indigenous health program at British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and Danielle Nadin, Lead for Science Strategy, CIHR-Institute of Gender and Health, present on Sex and Gender-Based Analysis Considerations in Indigenous Health Research.

Along with these outstanding presentations, we were honoured to have this Workshop opened and closed by Indigenous Elder and Dr. Roberta Price. Elder Roberta’s opening provided a sense of shared commitment and sense of connectedness among the Workshop participants.

INMD wishes to thank all who participated in this Workshop, and to the institutes and CIHR staff who contributed to planning the Workshop.
