Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
April 2023

At the end of March, the results of the Team Grant in Diabetes Prevention and Treatment in Indigenous Communities: Resilience and Wellness were released. I am very proud to be co-leading this component of the 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes initiative with the Institutes of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH) and collaborating with the Institutes of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH), and Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA).

The objectives of this funding opportunity are 1) to define and integrate models of resilience and wellness into diabetes prevention and treatment approaches among First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and 2) to support Indigenous-led and community-driven efforts to reverse the upward trajectory of diabetes in Indigenous communities.

I wish to congratulate the four new research teams funded that are profiled in this newsletter, and I look forward to learning about their progress as they work with Indigenous communities to develop more effective ways to treat and prevent diabetes.
