Message from Norman Rosenblum, INMD Scientific Director
March 2024

On February 27th, CIHR-hosted a virtual event for the Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition award, which is providing $28.4 million to support 43 early-career researchers. The REDI awardees, their Primary Mentors, and the funding partners of the program gathered to celebrate the success of the REDI awardees, announced by Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health.

The REDI Early Career Transition awards were launched in 2022 to help post-doctoral researchers, clinicians, and research associates from specific underrepresented groups launch their research faculty careers in Canada. As such, this event helped foster connections between the REDI awardees and provided an opportunity for them to build potential networks early in their funding. Each awardee was given the opportunity to present a snapshot of their proposed research and Primary Mentors were invited to co-present with the awardees on their career development plans.

Dr. Ayodele Odutayo

It was a pleasure to see the breadth of tremendous scientific talent and diversity supported through this program. Thank you to CIHR's Institute of Infection and Immunity who led the development of this program and to all of the partners who helped make this program successful.

Congratulations to the recipients of the REDI awards with an honorable mention to the INMD-supported researcher, Dr. Ayodele Odutayo, for his project entitled, “Expanding the use of SGLT-2 inhibitor to improve cardiorenal disease”.

Dr. Odutayo is a General Internist and Nephrologist. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at UofT in 2013 and completed his Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Epidemiology from 2013-2017, both at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. His research focuses on clinical trials examining cardiovascular and renal disease and is co-funded by the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
