CIHR Ethics Guidance for Developing Partnerships with Patients and Researchers

CIHR is pleased to announce the release of Ethics Guidance for Developing Partnerships with Patients and Researchers. This Guidance focuses on ethical concerns that need to be addressed to maintain trust in research partnerships across the research lifecycle.

A CIHR Working Group made up of patients, researchers and ethicists co-developed the Guidance through a consensus-based approach, informed by extensive consultations. The Working Group brought together diverse voices, expertise, and living or lived experience, and included Indigenous perspectives.

The Guidance is an educational resource intended primarily for patients and health researchers, as well as research institutions and funders of research. This CIHR document builds on the Patient Engagement Framework of the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans 2nd edition (TCPS 2).

Consultations

The Guidance reflects feedback received through two phases of consultations:

targeted consultation from December 2017 to March 2018 with interested individuals and groups, including the CIHR Standing Committee on Ethics, to prepare a draft for public release, and
public consultation from November 26, 2018 to February 25, 2019.

CIHR thanks the Working Group and all of the many groups and individuals who provided advice and feedback through the development of the guidance. CIHR also thanks the Standing Committee on Ethics for its advice during the project, and for its endorsement of the Guidance in December 2019.
