| 2-A10 Research Involving Trials | Applicants whose proposed research consists of a clinical trial must follow the 2nd edition of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2). See in particular the guidance provided in Chapter 11: Clinical Trials. CIHR has, in addition, specific requirements not included in the TCPS2 for CIHR-funded trials (both clinical and non-clinical), which are listed in this update. These specify that grant recipients must:

| 1-G Meaning of Signatures on Application Forms |
For training award applications, CIHR requires the signature of the institution under the Institution Paid signature block. In some cases, the applicant is not affiliated with a CIHR eligible Institution Paid. For example, the award is held outside of Canada or the institution is not a CIHR eligible Institution Paid. For CIHR eligible institutions, both signatures as Institution Paid and Research Institution are required. In addition, CIHR requires the signature from the Research Institution. As a result, a new subsection in the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide outlining the meaning of signatures on applications forms for those officials at research institutions (primary locations of research) to clarify the roles and responsibilities of officials at research institutions (primary locations of research) in the management of federal awards has been created. For the roles and responsibilities of research institutions (primary locations of research) in the management of federal awards, consult the meaning of signatures on applications forms for officials at research institutions (primary locations of research) subsection. |
| 1-J Time Frame for Accepting an Offer (Salary & Training Award Programs only) | CIHR has reviewed the timeframe provided to successful recipients of salary and training awards in light of the following changes:
As a result of the timeframe review, successful recipients of salary and training awards must now notify CIHR that they are accepting their offer of award within fifteen (15) business days (as opposed to 40 business days) following the communication of competition results. The shorter timeframe to accept an offer will allow CIHR to maximize research capacity by making additional offers of awards in a timelier manner, thus reducing the risk of lapsed funding. Failure to notify CIHR within this new timeframe will result in the award being cancelled. CIHR has successfully piloted this approach recently with the Fellowships program. |
| 2-A13 Requests For Supplementary Funds | The subsection was revised to clarify CIHR's policy that recipients of grants and salary awards may not receive maternity and parental leave supplements from CIHR. The amount that grant recipients may request when taking a maternity and/or parental leave is to cover eligible expenses under grants. |
| 2-A17 Residual Balances (Salary Award & Training Award Programs only) | Recipients of awards can incur expenses against their research allowance for a period of up to three months beyond the official termination date of their award, in order to bring their research activities to a close (e.g., dissemination of research results). The policy statement was revised to clarify that these expenses must be paid and reconciled before the end of the three-month period, at which time the account must be closed, and any unspent/residual funds must be returned to CIHR. |
| 2-B1.2 Maternity and/or Parental Leave (Training Award Programs only) | Should the term remaining on the award prior to the leave be less than the term of the maternity and/or parental leave, the term of the award will only be extended (upon return to the research environment) by the term remaining on the award prior to the leave. The time spent in the research environment must always be equal or greater than the duration of the leave taken and if not, the difference must be repaid.
When a training award recipient takes a maternity and/or parental leave, the research allowance is held in abeyance. Upon confirmation of return to the research training environment, the training award recipient may spend the remainder of the research allowance over the remaining (extended) duration of the award. Recipients of training awards may not request additional research allowances. |
| 2-B5 Replacement, Addition, Removal or Promotion of Principal Applicants and Co Applicants (Existing Grants) | To further acknowledge researchers' contributions and team building, and to more accurately reflect that grant membership can change over time in response to research needs:
The Nominated Principal Applicant is encouraged to communicate and ensure agreement on changes of this nature to project participants. Confirmation from existing Principal Applicants and Co-Applicants is not required for CIHR to process a request to add, replace, promote or remove individuals on or from grants. For CIHR's policy on replacement, addition, removal or promotion of principal applicants and co applicants (existing grants), including examples of justifiable changes, consult the Replacement, Addition, Removal or Promotion of Principal Applicants and Co Applicants (Existing Grants) subsection. |
