CIHR announces the launch of the revised Grants and Awards Guide. The guide has been significantly restructured and many changes have been made to the policies. The reader is strongly encouraged to read the entire document to familiarize themselves with the revised guide. The following table highlights some of the changes.
Effective December 15, 2009
| Section & Subsection(s) | Nature of Changes |
|---|---|
| Structural Changes | |
| Table of Contents |
In order to facilitate the harmonization of CIHR and Agency (CIHR, NSERC & SSHRC) policies, subsections on same (or very similar) topics (i.e., general individual eligibility requirements, application limits, paid parental leave, etc.) have been grouped together under a single subsection. There are no longer sections (i.e., entire chapters) solely dedicated to grant programs, salary award programs, training award programs, and partnered grant and award programs. |
| Definitions |
Definitions previously found in the subsection titled "Definitions" as well as definitions previously found throughout the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide were moved to the page titled "Glossary of Funding Related Terms". Links to definitions are provided in relevant sections of the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide. |
| Process-Related Information |
Process-related information (i.e., CIHR's requirements for requesting a relocation, etc.) was removed from the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide and inserted into checklists on the page titled "Index of Post-Administration Instruction Checklists". Links to checklists are provided in relevant sections of the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide. |
| Internationalization of CIHR funding policy and program tools |
CIHR has clarified the ways in which funded researchers and awardees can participate in international collaboration and global health research. For example, as outlined in section 1-A1.1 International Collaborations and section 1-A3 Global Health Research, CIHR contributes to and supports international research projects and collaborations. These projects and collaborations address a range of research areas, including, but not limited to established priorities in "global health research", and contribute to the development of health-research capacity both internationally and at home. |
| Policy Changes | |
| Individual Eligibility Requirements |
The definitions and eligibility requirements of "Nominated Principal Applicant", "Principal Applicant", "Co-Applicant" and "Collaborator" have been revised. |
| Foreign Researchers |
Principal Applicants are no longer required to have an employment relationship or academic status with a CIHR-eligible Institution. Foreign researchers who do not have such status, but who share responsibility for the direction of the proposed activities, and who meet the eligibility requirements for Principal Applicant as outlined in the Funding Opportunity, may apply as Principal Applicant. Foreign researchers applying as Principal Applicants are not required to spend a minimum of six months per year at a Canadian institution. (Note that the requirement for "6-months per year in Canada" (Grant programs only) remains in place for Nominated Principal Applicants). |
| Required Signatures on Application Forms |
Signatory requirements have been changed and the rules differ depending on whether the application is submitted electronically through ResearchNet or not. |
| Signatures on Application Forms from Institutions or Organizations of other applicants (Principal Applicant, Co-Applicant) |
CIHR no longer requires signatures, on the "CIHR Signature Pages," from an authorized official of the Principal Applicants' or Co-Applicants' Institution or Organization. |
| Renewal Applications |
When CIHR funding is renewable, CIHR will no longer remind Nominated Principal Applicants to submit their renewal applications within the timeline specified on the Authorization for Funding. A reminder that if a Nominated Principal Applicant submits a late renewal application, it will be considered a new application. |
| Requests for Extensions to Application Deadline Dates |
Extensions to the deadline dates indicated in the funding opportunity will only be considered in the following cases:
To request an extension, the Nominated Principal Applicant must submit a written request to "CIHR" for consideration, prior to the deadline date. |
| End of Grant Reports (Grant Programs only) |
As a condition of funding, a Nominated Principal Applicant may be required to file an end of grant report within 18 months of the End of the Grant. The Nominated Principal Applicant will be advised of any specific grants subject to this reporting requirement. |
