Register with CIHR

To apply for funding opportunities at CIHR, you need:

  • A ResearchNet Account
  • A CIHR PIN
  • A CCV Account

Get a ResearchNet Account

  • You must have a ResearchNet account to apply for CIHR funding opportunities.
  • You should have only one ResearchNet account.
  • To register for an account, go to ResearchNet and select "Register" from the Sign-in box on the right hand side of the page, as shown in the screen shot below. Fill in and submit the on-line form that appears on your screen.
  • Once you have submitted this form, your account is created immediately.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Self-identification Questionnaire

  • Completion of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Self-identification Questionnaire is mandatory for CIHR application participants at the full application stage and for Peer Review Committee members at the review of Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest stage.
  • For applicants, since the questionnaire must be completed by all participants before the application can be submitted, we strongly recommend that you complete your questionnaire immediately through your ResearchNet account. No need to wait for an upcoming competition!
  • For Peer Review Committee members, the questionnaire must be completed before accessing your assigned applications for review.

Get a CIHR PIN

  • A CIHR PIN is required to apply for CIHR funding opportunities.
  • Once you have a ResearchNet account, you must either:
    • Register for a CIHR PIN if you do not already have one;

      or

    • Validate the five- or six-digit CIHR PIN you already have, from before you created your ResearchNet account.

To register for a CIHR PIN:

  • Log into your ResearchNet Account;
  • Select your name from the top right hand side of the screen;
  • Select "Register for a CIHR PIN" from the drop-down menu; and
  • Complete and submit the on-line form that appears on the screen.
  • CIHR PIN requests are processed Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm (ET). You should receive a confirmation e-mail with your CIHR PIN within 24 business hours of submitting your form. If it has been longer than 24 business hours since you submitted your form and you still have not received a confirmation e-mail with your CIHR PIN, please call 1-888-603-4178 or e-mail support-soutien@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.
  • Note that when you register for a PIN this way, your PIN will automatically be validated in your ResearchNet account once it’s activated. There are no additional steps you need to take.

To validate an existing CIHR PIN you already have, from before you created your ResearchNet account:

  • Log into your ResearchNet Account (see instructions above if you do not already have an account);
  • Select your name from the top right hand side of the screen;
  • Select "Validate a CIHR PIN" from the drop-down menu; and
  • Complete and submit the on-line form that appears on the screen.
  • Your CIHR PIN has now been validated and is now associated with your ResearchNet account.

Find your CIHR PIN at any time:

  • You can find your CIHR PIN any time by logging into your ResearchNet Account, selecting your name from the top right of your screen, and selecting Account Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.

Troubleshooting:

  • If you already have a valid CIHR PIN, the drop-down menu from your name at the top right of the screen when you first log in to ResearchNet will only show one choice: Account Settings.
    • If you do not see the options to either Register for a CIHR PIN or Validate a CIHR PIN, that means you already have a valid CIHR PIN.
    • Click on the Account Settings option from the drop-down menu under your name to see your valid CIHR PIN.

Complete a Canadian Common CV or an Applicant Profile CV, as appropriate

  • All participants (e.g., principal applicants, co-applicants) must submit a CV (except for Collaborators).
  • If you are a Canadian academic applicant, you must submit a CIHR Biosketch CV, using the Canadian Common CV (CCV).
  • If you are a knowledge user, non-academic, Indigenous organization, or an international applicant, you have the option of submitting either a CIHR Biosketch CV or an Applicant Profile CV.
  • A CV is not required for Collaborators. The contribution and services provided by the Collaborator(s) should be highlighted in the research proposal.

To complete a CIHR Biosketch CV:

  1. Log in to the Common CV (CCV) system.
  2. Go to the CV menu on the top left of the page and select "Funding."
  3. In the Funding Source field, select "CIHR" from the dropdown menu, select "CIHR Biosketch" as the CV Type and then click "Load."
  4. Enter data in each of the required sections and click "Done" when you are finished each section. If there are any errors, they will be displayed in each section.
  5. The CV data entered in CCV can be viewed in PDF format by selecting "Preview" on the top right of the page. Read through the document to identify any changes that need to be made in CCV before submitting the CV to CIHR.
  6. Once satisfied with the information in your CV, click "Submit." A CCV confirmation number will be generated in the status message, and will also be located at the top of the CV PDF document. Record this confirmation number as you will need it to link the CV to your application in ResearchNet.
  7. Enter the required CCV confirmation number(s) under the "Identify Participants Task" (click "Edit" under the participant in question and input the CCV Confirmation Number where requested).
  8. If any participant wishes to make changes to their Common CV after it has been linked to an application, they must repeat the steps described above. After the desired changes are made on the CCV website, the new CV will need to be submitted, generating a NEW CCV confirmation number, which will need to be updated in ResearchNet.

Notes:

  • Failing to provide the correct CV format for a given role/participant type may negatively impact the evaluation of your application.
  • Participants can preview their CCVs in ResearchNet by clicking on the Tasks page.
  • During peak periods, there can be a delay between the time that you submit the CV and when ResearchNet is able to validate it. We highly recommend that you complete and submit your CV well in advance of your internal institutional submission deadline.

To complete an Applicant Profile CV:

Validate your CIHR PIN in your CCV account

  • Log into your CCV account;
  • Select the "PIN/Systems Account" button from the black, horizontal menu bar on top of the page.

If your PIN appears:

  • Click on the pencil to the left of the PIN, then click on "Validate".
  • Your PIN is now valid.

If you do not see a PIN:

  • If there is no PIN in the tab, you will need to "add" your PIN.
  • Select "CIHR" as the agency, and then add your CIHR PIN number in the field named "PIN".
  • Click on "Validate".
  • You have now added and validated your PIN.
